Napping for your heart

Remember the book 'Everything I needed to know I learned in Kindergarten" - seems we should have remembered to nap. A new study from Greece finds napping protects our hearts. The researcher found napping for 30 minutes, 3 times a week reduced death from heart disease by 37%.

The study was done over 6 years on more than 23,000 otherwise healthy men.

The researcher goes on to say, even if you can't find the time to nap, 5-10 minutes of time away from it all with your eyes closed might also do a 'heart' good.

Just one thing, if you're caught napping on the job, PLEASE don't blame me.

Snow Storm Readiness

Okay, we live in the great northeast and snow storms are common place - well, usually they are. Nevertheless, with the first major storm looming, some of us may get nervous. Then again, there may be some newcomers to the Capital Region.
The American Red Cross sent out a comprehensive list of things to keep in mind to keep us safe and healthy during a snowstorm. They include:

Stay with your car. Do not try to walk to safety.
Tie a brightly colored cloth (preferably red) to the antenna for rescuers to see.
Start the car and use the heater for about 10 minutes every hour. Keep the exhaust pipe clear so fumes won't back up in the car.
Leave the overhead light on when the engine is running so that you can be seen.
As you sit, keep moving your arms and legs to keep blood circulating and to stay warm.
Keep one window away from the blowing wind slightly open to let in air.
Staying with your car also helps prevent hypothermia, over-exposure to extremely cold weather, dangerous wind chills, ice and snowstorms, freezing rain or sleet.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Many local hospitals are involved in research projects, oftentimes for conditions that leave your doctor, stumped. One of those studies is going on right now at Albany Medical Center. It's studying a new medicine to treat restless leg syndrome (RLS). If you're over age 18, in good health and suffer symptoms of RLS at least twice a week over the past three months, they're looking for you. Give them a call at 518-452-0914.

So, what exactly is RLS? It's the urge to move your legs combined with a sense of crawling or tingling in your legs that worsens at nighttime. It's a neurologic condition affecting up to 10% of the population.
