Locks of Love

What's with the long hair?

Many of you have been asking about my 'new do'.

The answer is - I'm growing it for Locks of Love.

It started as a hairstyle for a play I was in. Then the nurses who care for a friend's elderly mother said to him, " I see Benita's growing her hair for those cancer kids" .. and my course was set.

Then something else happened. You may recall Jasmine Johnson. We reported on her many accomplishments. She was diagnosed at 2 with cancer and battled the disease and its effects for most of her 20 years, losing her battle earlier this year. It's in Jasmine's memory I'll donate my locks.

But I'm not alone in doing this. I know there are many people who are growing their hair as well. So send me your stories and each week I'll share them.

I plan on cutting my hair at the end of August. I'm working on a project with RUMORS HAIR SALON in Latham so everyone who wants to join me, can.

For more information on Locks of Love just go to http://www.locksoflove.org

Tomorrow I'll share the first local story - it's about a group of kids who'll be donating their hair this Sunday.

Hi Benita. My name is Sara Murray and I am a 20 year old college student who calls the capital region home. I always had long, wavy hair as a kid and it was seldom a day that you didn't see a long braid down my back. In sixth grade I saw a news show on Locks of Love and shortly thereafter I donated 17 inches of my hair. Since then I have made three more donations to Locks of Love over the years. My sister joined in with her three donations and my mother contributed with her two. Through all this it has become a family competition to see whose hair grows the fastest and we are often caught measuring each others hair to see if it is long enough to cut again. So we will be watching you as you grow and measure your own, and trust us, it is worth the wait! Good luck!! P.S. Make sure you share with us before and after pictures!

Hi Benita. I watched your show last night as I do every night, and decided to come to your blog, which I never do. My name is Donna Gorton and I live in Whitehall now for the last 7 years or so (originally from Newtown, CT), I'm turning 48 soon, and I've been growing my very short hair out for about 1 year for Locks of Love, I have a while to go yet though. My mom died of cancer, Christmas day 1998, as have a few of my other close relatives, so cancer is very close to my family. I was also born with Spina Bifida, so I know what it's like to be a sick child. When I heard about locks of love a few years ago, I thought it was such a great organization, but didn't think I would be able to donate my colored hair, but then I went to their website and found out that they took all sorts of hair. Anyway I think what you are doing is great to bring awareness to many people, that something as easy as growing their hair could bring such happiness to so many.

My name is Sherry Carcia, I am a retired grandma living in Latham. A couple of years ago I saw Ann Curry (Today Show) get her hair cut for " locks of Love". Prior to that I didn't really know anything about it. I have always been told I have nice hair. My friends would often tell me they wished they had my hair, after watching Ann Curry it occured to me that someone really could have my hair. On Christmas Day 2005 my daughter, grandaughter and I decided to start growing our hair for Locks of Love. We are cutting it this September to celebrate my 60th birthday. I am looking forward to cutting and sharing my hair, and who knows if I'm not too old I may do it again. I know my daughter and grandaughter will.

Hi Benita, I am writing on behalf of my 11 year old daughter Kelsey. When kelsey was 7 she saw a show about kids with cancer and how they recieved thier wigs and decided at this was something she wanted to do. After almost 2 years she donated 12 inches to locks of love. Kelsey's hair is almost long enough to donate again and has inspired her sister and I to donate also. I have a bit to go yet but cant wait to do this as a family. I think this is a great way for a child to help out another person. Good luck to you, Heidi Quackenbush

Bonita,
I am 53 and my hair was getting a bit long. I was getting ready to cut it when I saw you were donating your long hair, so I decided to do the same. The bad news is that I went swimming at the Y and the overchlorination burned my hair so bad that now I am not sure it is worth saving...I am protecting what didn't break off in hopes that it might still be salvageable. I only went swimming three times this month so it is unbelievable that this kind of damage could happen so instantly, especially when I JUST made the decision to donate it. Do you know a salon that could evaluate my hair
